Standard Yarn Weight System Gauge

The Craft Yarn Council has developed a Standard Yarn Weight System to help us understand yarn weight (thickness).  This chart shows yarn categories, gauge (number of stitches) over 4 inches, and recommended needle and hook sizes in US and metric sizing.

Although yarn manufacturers are not required to follow this system, it is becoming more widely accepted and these symbols can be found on many yarn labels.
